RESUMO

OBJECTIVEThe present study investigated the protective role of Hyparrhenia hirta (H. hirta) against sodium nitrate (NaNO3)-induced hepatoxicity.

METHODSMale Wistar rats were randomly divided into three groups: a control group and two treated groups during 50 d with NaNO3 administered either alone in drinking water or co-administered with H. hirta.

RESULTSNaNO3 treatment induced a significant increase in serum levels of glucose, total cholesterol and triglyceride while serum total protein level decreased significantly. Transaminases and lactate deshydrogenase activities in serum were elevated indicating hepatic cells' damage after treatment with NaNO3. The hyperbilirubinemia and the increased serum gamma glutamyl transferase activities suggested the presence of cholestasis in NaNO3 exposed rats. In parallel, a significant increase in malondialdehyde level along with a concomitant decrease in total glutathione content and superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were observed in the liver after NaNO3 treatment. Furthermore, nitrate caused a significant induction of DNA fragmentation. These modifications in NaNO3-treated rats corresponded histologically with hepatocellular necrosis and mononuclear cells infiltration. H. hirta supplementation showed a remarkable amelioration of the abnormalities cited above.

CONCLUSIONThe results concluded that the treatment with H. hirta had a significant role in protecting the animals from nitrate-induced liver dysfunction.

RESUMO

Herpes simplex esophagitis [HSE] has rarely been reported in immunocompetent individuals. In a search of Medline until October 2012, we found only one case of HSE in a pregnant female. We present the first case of HSE in a healthy 36-year-old female at 27 weeks gestation who recovered without antiviral therapy

RESUMO

OBJECTIVETo determine the efficiency of selenium and/or vitamin E to alleviate lung oxidative damage induced by dimethoate, an organophosphorus compound.

METHODSAdult Wistar rats were exposed during 30 days either to dimethoate (0.2 g/L of drinking water), dimethoate+selenium (0.5 mg/kg of diet), dimethoate+vitamin E (100 mg/kg of diet), or dimethoate+selenium+vitamin E.

RESULTSExposure to dimethoate caused oxidative stress in lung evidenced by an increase of malondialdehyde, protein carbonyl groups and advanced oxidation protein products. An increase in glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, catalase and a decrease in acetylcholinesterase and butyrylcholinesterase activities, glutathione, non-protein thiols and vitamins C levels were observed. Histopathological changes in lung tissue were noted as emphysema, hemorrhages and hemosiderin deposits. Co-administration of selenium or vitamin E to the diet of dimethoate treated rats ameliorated the biochemical parameters as well as histological impairments. The joint effect of these elements was more powerful in antagonizing dimethoate-induced lung oxidative damage.

CONCLUSIONWe concluded that selenium and vitamin E ameliorated the toxic effects of this pesticide in lung tissue suggesting their role as potential antioxidants.

RESUMO

Colonic lipomas are benign adipose tumors which are usually submucosal. Small lesions are asymptomatic and may be detected incidentally. Large lipomas can cause symptoms. We report a case of symptomatic giant colonic lipoma. A 67-year old woman was admitted to hospital with persistent abdominal pain, for which a barium enema showed a large polypoid mass occluding the lumen of the transverse colon. Colonoscopy revealed a tumor narrowing the bowel lumen of about 5 cm in diameter with a sessile appearance and ulcerated overlying mucosa. The possibility of colonic malignancy could not be precluded and an operative resection was performed. Pathological examination revealed a colonic lipoma. Twelve months after the surgery, the patient was free of symptoms. Awareness of the possibility of colonic lipomas is important for clinicians in terms of evaluation of therapeutic regimen

RESUMO

Crohn disease is an inflammatory bowel disease of which one cannot declare itself healed. If is a considerably invalidating disease, and surgery is necessary with more than 80% of patients during its long evolution. After a recent review of the literature, we wanted to contribute to the study of the predictive factors of risk of relapse among 26 patients operated for an intestinal Crohn disease during a period of 1 6 years, from 1986 till 2001. Sex ratio was 0.3 and average age was 33.9 years. Six patients only [23.1%] were known undergoing and treated for Crohn disease. Surgery was indicated urgently in 12 cases [46.2%]. The gravity of urgently operated patients burdened the post-operative morbidity in 38-5% of cases of which 2 deaths. Six patients presented a post-operative relapse for an average delay of 40.8 months; among them 3 patients were operated, in our series, we noted that the relapse rate is more frequent with women that with men [42% / 21%], and age does not intervene in the relapse contrary to smoking. The rate of relapses was so much more brought up that Crohn disease is former. The relapse was more frequent when the edge of section was sick [5/6]. A post-operative medical treatment in the severe forms reduces fhe rate of relapses until 24%

RESUMO

Carcinoid tumors of the appendix are rare. The appendix constitutes the most frequent localization of these tumors. We studied of a retrospective way all cases that had an appendectomy in the service of general surgery of sfax on a period of 7 years going from 1995 to 2001. during this period 9584 patients had an appendectomy in our service. Among which, 46 cases [0.48%] of carcinoid tumor of the appendix have been diagnosed. In more than 95% of cases, patients were admitted due to acute appendicitis; but none of them had the signs of the carcinoid syndrome. The treatment was a simple appendectomy in 44 cases [95%]. The right hemicolectomy was necessary in two cases, because of an invasion of the appendicular base in a case and a tumor greater than 2 cm in the other case. There is no reported case of lymph node or systemic metastasis. The authors discuss data in the literature and analyse the features of the clinical picture, diagnosis, and try to define a convenient attitude of treatment of these tumors
